About the Client

Prabuddha Dasgupta (1956–2012) was one of India's most revered photographers — a self-taught artist whose work moved between the commercial and fine art worlds with equal authority. Over more than three decades, he produced some of the most iconic imagery in Indian visual culture. His Ladakh series documented India's frontier wilderness in stark, spiritual black and white. Women (1996, Viking Books) placed the nude back into Indian cultural conversation. Edge of Faith (2009, Seagull Books) captured the Catholic community of Goa with quiet intimacy. His work has been exhibited internationally, featured in The Paris Review, Nudi, and India Now — New Photographic Visions, and held by institutions including the Museo Ken Damy in Brescia and Galleria Carla Sozzani in Milan. When Prabuddha passed away in August 2012, his estate faced a question that every artist's legacy eventually confronts: where does the work live?

The Project

The brief was to build a home worthy of the work — not a promotional site, but an archive. We designed and built a complete digital catalogue organised across the full breadth of his output: personal series, commissioned campaigns, books, and exhibition records. Navigation was kept typographic and deliberately minimal; the photographs are always the loudest thing on the page. Behind the public archive, we built a custom content management system for the estate — making it straightforward to add series, update records, and manage image rights without technical knowledge. Copyright protection was implemented at the image layer. Every design decision asked one question first: does this help the photograph?

Impact

The archive has been live for over a decade and remains the definitive online presence for Prabuddha Dasgupta's work. Collectors, curators, gallerists, and institutions worldwide use it to research and source his photographs. The estate has full control over what is shown, how it is described, and what is protected. Deepak has maintained this archive on retainer since its launch — cataloguing newly surfaced work, managing the CMS, and ensuring the site remains a reliable and worthy home for one of India's most important photographic legacies.
